The first 15 weeks!

It's so hard to believe we've already made it 15 weeks!  We didn't start taking weekly bump pictures until we went to our first appointment.  When we found out we were having twins, we knew it would be crazy to watch how my belly would grow exponentially week after week.  Here's how it's expanded thus far:
7+ weeks - right after our first appointment when we found out we were having TWINS!

9 weeks

10 weeks... whoa, those 2700 calories are catching up!

11 weeks

12 weeks

13 weeks

14 weeks
15 weeks

I'm sure you're asking "Kim, why has it taken you so long to start posting pictures?"  Well, ladies and gentlemen, I'm just lazy.  No, really.  Growing two tiny humans (and those beautiful round heads) has made me tired and lacking energy to do much... even updating my three faithful readers.

So how's it been going the first 15 weeks?  Honestly, not bad.  I've had my fair share of "morning sickness", and instead of calling it that, a better description is feeling really hungover most days.  My stomach just hurts.. I'm not nauseous, it's just a bad stomachache that makes me want Coke and french fries.  I have an awful gag reflex... brushing my teeth most days is a challenge.  I hope this doesn't mean my kids will hate to brush their teeth.  And lastly, I've had pretty bad headaches.  They aren't the worst in the world, but when I can only take Tylenol, it's like fighting fire with a watering can.

So those are my complaints... and I shouldn't call them complaints, because I would rather feel sick and tired and growing two healthy babies than not.  When I'm "over it", Daniel reminds me to think about them swimming around and growing, and that really helps.

Since we've told everyone that a) we're pregnant and b) we're having twins, we've come up with a list of FAQs.
  • What's the most common response you've gotten?
    • "Oh Shit!"
    • 95% of people who say that to us say it meaning "that's awesome" in the best possible way
    • the other 5% of people who say that to us say it meaning... better you than me.  And guess what?  They're right, we are so excited, and it IS better them than us!
  • Were you taking fertility medicine?
    • Nope.  This is what they call "spontaneous" twins.
  • Do twins run in your family?
    • Nope, but as one of our doctors told us, they do now!
  • Do twins run in Daniel's family?
    • Nope, but even if they did... they only run on the female side (interesting fact, huh?)
  • Where will you PUT two babies on your small frame??  You're going to be HUGE!
    • Good question... we'll find out, won't we? :)
  • Are you excited??
    • Ummm, absolutely.  Am I also terrified?  Absolutely.  Will this be a ton of work?  More than we're prepared for.  But this will be, hands down, the best ride of our lives, and I can't wait.
  • Will you find out their genders?
    • ABSOLUTELY.  I'm not one of those crazy people with will-power of steel who will wait until delivery.  I'm a planner.  And I need to know.  Now.  As a matter of fact, we will find out FRIDAY what they are, with a fun gender reveal on Sunday!  Can.not.wait.
  • What do you want to have?  What do you THINK you're having?
    • I'm going to be 1000000% honest here: Daniel and I want two healthy babies.  We will forego simple things like 20 fingers and 20 toes, we want big huge heads and beating hearts and organs.  If we have two boys, two girls, or one of each, we will be thrilled so long as they are healthy.
    • If we had to PICK, we would probably say boy/girl... just because having one of each would be pretty cool, but again... healthy.  We want a healthy pregnancy and a healthy delivery and then we'll focus on raising amazing kids who will be awesome adults - boys or girls.
    • My only "gut feeling" is that we aren't having two boys.  Maybe that's just my inner Grandma Stella wishing and hoping for at least one girl ;)
  • Have you had any cravings??
    • I wouldn't say that I've had any food that I've gotta-eat-right-this-second-or-else-I'll-die.  I drink a lot of milk, and it generally always sounds good to me.  I also eat a lot of Jersey Mike's Subs.  Turkey and cheese with lettuce, mayo, and lots of pickles.  If I don't know what I want to eat, that always sounds good to me.  We eat dinner there a few times a week.  I'm not ashamed.
    • Oh, and if I wake up in the middle of the night, I'm starving and generally eat a considerable amount of food.  My go-to is a bowl of cereal since that's easy.
If I think of anything else to add, I'll update this FAQ :)

In other news, I've gained 14 pounds (almost at my 1 pound/week goal).  Daniel has worked on getting some projects done around the house so we can soon focus on the playroom and nursery.  We've started to do some research on car seats and strollers and cribs... but then take a break because it's really overwhelming.  In just the past few days, I can no longer sleep on my stomach.  I'm anxiously awaiting the first time I feel them move... hopefully I won't have to wait much longer.  More importantly, I can't wait for Daniel to feel them move.  He deserves that.

Just 5 more sleeps until we see our beautiful babies again!  I hope this week flies by.

I think that's all for now folks... I can't wait to update soon with all the fun happenings of the #doublesinks

We made a wish, and two came true!

We waited about six months after Baby Sink to regroup and start trying again.  After three agonizing months of trying (hindsight: it wasn't long at all, at the time: it felt like years), we finally got the positive we were waiting for!

never been so happy/excited/nervous for two pink lines!

we were thrilled!! this is post-postive test (and post-gym) :)

the next morning Daniel sent me the sweetest message

I had to thank Robin in advance for getting me through the next 9 months! :)
The next fun part was telling our families.  We had a trip scheduled that weekend to take my family to The Bay.  Last Christmas, I had made a sign for my parent's house that reads "Nana and Papa's house - where cousins go to become best friends".  I had been saving it for just the right time.  We had Abby open a "gift" and everyone found out the good news!  Lots of happy tears and hugs.

A few days later, we had an impromptu Sweet Frog date with Daniel's family, and he told Jacob that he needed to meet his cousin... cue more happy tears and hugs!

We had several weeks to wait for our first appointment.  Thankfully, those weeks went by quickly, and I was only nervous the day of the appointment.  I spent the first few weeks was fairly sick, but continued going to the gym and trying to eat healthy, and welcomed every bit of nausea :)  Daniel was awesome - like always - trying to make me feel better and picking up my slack cooking and cleaning.  The most annoying thing he did during those first few weeks was talk about us having twins because he wanted to have twins so bad.  I kept telling him that we were NOT having twins, the chances were SO low, and he needed to stop.  He even got my mom in on it - she was calling the baby "peanut" and one day said "you know how many nuts are in a peanut, right??"... I told her to shut it, we weren't having twins.  Don't get me wrong, I would be thrilled with twins, but it was so unrealistic for me to even think about.

First appointment.  Cue racing heart, nervous sweats, and lots of positive thoughts about a heartbeat and healthy baby.  The ultrasound tech is talking to us and telling us all about what she's about to do (as if we've never had an ultrasound before).  I was too nervous to tell her that we've been there done that, so I just nodded my head.  She had the screen turned and was doing her thing, and I heard her whisper "good", so I thought to myself that it was a good thing.  Then she said "well, this is going to take me a minute" (Daniel and I both think Oh, no...) and she says "because this is going to take me a while longer.  I'm going to do double the work - there are two babies in there with two heartbeats!".  I started bawling and Daniel said "Are you kidding me!?!" (because he had been talking about it for weeks now!).  She looked at him and said "Honey, we don't kid about things like this... you're having twins!"  I was still crying, so the ultrasound tech told me that it would be okay, and I had to explain to her that they were the happiest tears imaginable!

Holy.Cannoli.
Praise.Jesus.
Oh.Shit.

To say that we were thrilled is an absolute understatement.  We hoped and prayed for a healthy baby, and we were doubly blessed.  Our lives went from single to plural in an instant.  We started talking about babies, heartbeats, heads, them, they, etc.  Whoa.  So now we have a Baby A and a Baby B.  They both measured 7 weeks 1 day, and they both had heartbeats of 154.

A is on the right and B is on the left
As we were anxiously waiting for the doctor, we talked about how we were going to break the news to our families, and knew we had to do it in person.  And we smiled until our cheeks hurt.

Our doctor came in and said "well, you guys don't do anything easy, do you??"  Haha, guess not.  She was so happy for us, too.  Being pregnant with twins is a whole different ballgame than just one baby, so we were told we needed to also see a high risk doctor, and we started researching all of the new stuff we had gotten ourselves into.  Daniel made this cute announcement (since he's a Star Wars nerd) to show our families:

So we got home, regrouped, and started making our rounds.  Because Daniel had been talking about twins for the past few weeks, guess what... nobody believed us.  My sister even thought we had photoshopped the ultrasound picture.  It took lots of convincing that we were, in fact, having two babies.  Cue lots of happy tears, hugs, and genuine happiness.  It was one of the happiest days of our lives.

Oh, and how did I tell my mom?  I said "how many nuts did you say were in a peanut"?  She kind of giggled, and I said "well, that's how many babies we are going to have!".  She stared at me and I said "we are having twins!!".  She cried and cried :)

We had a high risk appointment a few weeks later, which was an agonizing wait.  We knew it was really early and we were praying to have two healthy babies up on that screen.  That appointment went amazing, and there were those two little peanuts... swimming around and growing like weeds!  They were also able to tell us that their heads were developing normally (the best news in the whole world!).  We've never been so thankful before.  I was also told that I had to stop all exercising and just needed to eat and eat and eat.  Talk about a lifestyle change!  But I'm willing to do anything to keep these two precious babies healthy, even if that means that I hang out on the couch eating ice cream :)

After getting the good report from the doctor, it was impossible to hide my growing bump.  I had a pre-planned trip to Blacksburg, so I was able to tell all of my Hokie momma's in person!  We told everyone at work and all of our friends and extended family as soon as we saw them.  Some people would have waited until it was "safe", but based on our past experience, we wanted all of the support we could get - in case something good or bad happens.

We have done LOTS of research on being pregnant with twins, having twin babies, and raising twins.  My incredible husband started reading right away (and he NEVER reads!), and giving me some advice and has made sure I do lots of resting!

And I made some cute matching onesies for our announcement picture

We had our first trimester screening this past Monday, and we were hoping and praying that our babies were healthy - since this was the appointment last time where we got bad news.  We have been hopeful, but not naive to the fact that something could go wrong.  Our appointment couldn't have been better.  Our babies are normal, normal, normal (that word was music to our ears!).  All results for trisomy abnormalities were normal.  They both had beautiful, big, huge, round heads!  We saw them swimming around and waving.  Baby B was a diva and always wanted to be in the picture.  Baby A was just hanging around, and didn't want to cooperate as easy for the measurements and pictures.  And it was the most amazing sight.  Their heartbeats are the most amazing sound.

We made our first twin purchase!  Since we'll probably have newborns around Easter, we found these adorable "Just Hatched" bibs

After our appointment went so well, we made it Facebook official!  Because you know, these days, it's not real until it's on social media.

We are so happy.  Daniel is the most incredible husband, and is already the best daddy.  He loves my growing bump.  He does everything in his power to make me happy and comfortable (almost) every day :)  He makes me feel beautiful, despite me not being able to work out, eat like a cow, and watch the number on the scale rise.  He talks to the babies, makes big plans for them, and loves them beyond measure.  We are taking this day by day, and not taking a minute of our babies for granted.  We know that things could go wrong, and are so thankful for what we now have.

Pintail Landing Improvements & More Fun

We've been working so hard on the outside of the house.  Since the new shutters and windows, we've had other fun/annoying projects going on...

After two and a half years, I FINALLY have customized coat/purse hooks in our foyer.  And I'm in love!

We've been needing to do something with our back deck for a while now.  So we decided to powerwash & stain our deck.  Powerwashing - no big deal.  Staining - TERRIBLE.  The jazillion spindles took forever.  Three weekends of work later, it's beautiful!

Daniel went away for the weekend to PA, and when he arrived home, I was determined to eat outside on the deck, even though it wasn't done yet.

hands down one of my most favorite parts of our new outside - the gorgeous patio lighting we strung!  a few domestic violence run-ins later, we have perfection <3
And here is the after product... we have spent so much time outside enjoying our deck, it was well worth all of the hard work!

this is where you can find us!

Unexpectedly, I was promoted at work!  We went out and celebrated one night - thai food and 22 Jump Street

For Mother's Day, Kelly and I gave Momma a girls day out to Yorktown Beach.  We finally found a free Saturday we could all do it, and enjoyed a day full of rest and relaxation on the sand!  It was overcast and the temperature was mild... can't ask for much more than that.  Love, love, loved all the girl time <3

Daniel is the sweetest.  He planned a girl's night out (Baby Sink's due date gift) with me and the ladies of our family.  We ate at Antonio's and tried our best at Paint Nite!  Even though we aren't blossoming artists, we drank wine, laughed and had a great time.

Grandma Stella has been helping Ashley out a ton at her new house trying to get the yard under control.  Since it's summer and pretty hot, she decided she needed a new sweat band so the sweat doesn't get into her eyes.  The only thing she could find at Walmart was a sweat band with a NBA logo.  Thankfully, Ashley snapped a picture of this gem... I haven't laughed so hard in a longggg time.

Then some random stuff happened that required documentation...

Susan came for a visit and like always, we did lots of laughing.  We enjoyed a delicious meal outside on the patio underneath our new beautiful lights!

The marathon update

...the update continues!  Our jam-packed schedule wasn't over after the weddings.

Daniel & I signed up to run a 4-miler through our jobs.  It was my first race!  I conned one of my favorite coworkers, Andrea, in to running it with me.  Despite having some sort of nasty summer cold, I pushed through and ran about 3/4 of it :)
All of the Martin runners!

Daniel and I with our favorite, Andrea :)
The day after our 4-miler, we went back to Innsbrook to enjoy some good tunes from Corey Smith.  The weather was perfect (sans a tiny shower), and we had lots of fun!

We hung out at Kelly and Derek's one night.  We enjoyed good food, and while the boys were outside smoking cigars, Kelly and I gave Abby a rare treat - a bubble bath!  She was so uncertain about it at first that we had to force her to sit down.  She's the absolute cutest!

What is this stuff??  At one point she said "where's the snowman??" hahaha

Cheese!
Summertime means pooltime and food with our families.  We spent one Saturday hanging out at the pool and went back to my parent's for dinner.  Fortunately, Abby forgot that she didn't like the pool last summer, and she's fearless.  You need to have eight arms when you're around her... she runs straight into the water.  She didn't want to spend too much time in the "Abby Pool" (not Baby Pool), and loved the Big Pool!  I didn't get any pictures at the pool (I was too busy chasing Abby around), but Kelly snapped a few at my parent's house that night.

Have you had your fill of Abby cuteness?  Just when you think the cuteness can't get any more, BAM!  Kelly & Derek went out for their anniversary, so Guncle and Aunt Tim got to play with our favorite little lady :)

I've been doing a BANGING job at the gym.  Seriously.  I work out harder/stronger/better than I ever have and feel fabulous.  I'm at a healthy weight, I still eat what I want while making healthier choices, and I'm committed to pushing it 110% at the gym several times per week.  I'm really proud of how far I've come.  I'm not trying to toot my own horn, I just need to re-read this when things start to slack, life gets too busy.  I mean but come on, toot toot.

I convinced Georgia to attend the Rock the Block event at the gym - outdoor bootcamp.  It was fun, hot, grueling, and so rewarding.

sweaty rockstars
We have been looking forward to The Sink Family vacation to Corolla.  We had a Friday night planned to order take-out & pack, until Abby decided she really wanted to see us one last time before we departed for NC.  And by that, I mean the sweet thing had another seizure :(  Guncle packed up crayons and coloring books and we met at Chippenham to check on our sweet girl.

kisses for Guncle

This time, she wasn't as much like a zombie post-seizure, and we even made it out to dinner afterwards!  We kicked off vacation with some Abby kisses, margaritas, and puddle jumping.

DJ marg and giggles from Abby.  Ribbit and Night Night joined us at dinner, too

jumping in puddles, Abby's new favorite past-time - love those two more than anything in the world
Early the next morning, we were off to Corolla for the week!  We had a blast.  There was a lot of family coming/going, which made it interesting.  We were able to stay the whole week, and really enjoyed it.

Our week included (but wasn't limited to) working on a puzzle, reading trashy books, drinking alcoholic beverages, riding beach cruisers all over Corolla, hanging out in the hot tub until we were pruny, relaxing, exercising, getting sunburnt, you know the deal.  We got in trouble by the neighborhood police for hanging our towels on the railing (not for being drunk/loud, but for making the house look trashy).  We laughed a lot.  We ate a ton of food.  We made lots of good memories :)

My mom turned another year older while we were at the beach, so we had to celebrate upon our return!  We grilled salmon, drank bloodys, and ate Butter Pecan ice cream cake :)

we are a family that loves bloody marys!

We celebrated Baby Sink's due date on June 24th.  Daniel came and we had a thai lunch date, and spent the evening bingeing on Orange is the New Black and reflecting on the craziness of the past 6 months.  My mother-in-law sent me flowers

We FaceTimed with the sweetest thing in the whole world who never fails to put HUGE smiles on our faces.  She recently started holding the phone on her own during our phone calls, and it's so funny.  Half the time we can't see her face, and she takes us all around the house just blabbing away.

Exhibit A: close up of Abby

Exhibit B: the side of the house

And Daniel bought me a fun night out with our lady family members - PaintNite :)

We had a department outing in June in lieu of a birthday celebration.  Ironically, it was "office morale day" at the Diamond (not even kidding).  It was hot, it was fun, and we were not in the office!

Speaking of fun happenings during work, TMA is awesome and had a World Cup viewing party during lunch one day

We had to celebrate Father's Day with my family ex post facto, so we spent the day at the pool (extra bonus: with some special relatives in town) and ended the night with our traditional Father's Day meal - a delicious Shrimp Boil

We went for our annual 4th of July trip to the Bay with Annabeth and Jarrett.  We were due to arrive at the same time as Hurricane Arthur.  Yep - you read that right, a hurricane in the beginning of the summer hitting NC.  We watched the news and decided that we would ride it out and make the best of it.  We arrived around 6pm when the clouds and wind were barely starting to arrive.  We went for a quick swim and fixed dinner.  When we went to bed around 11, it was kind of windy and raining.  I woke up a few times in the middle of the night, and the wind was pretty loud, but I knew as long as the fan was going, we still had power.  So we woke up the next morning to a lot of wind and sunshine.  Seriously - just a one night stand with Arthur.  Easy.  We spent the next few days hanging out in the Bay, eating good food, riding around on the golf cart, and playing games.  So much fun, like always.  The only downside to this year's trip was that Grandma Stella decided not to come.  She has a busy schedule, but sent lots of food :)  We definitely missed her wit and all of the laughs she brings with her!
